MAKING OF BAGS USING NEWSPAPER - BEST OUT OF WASTE

In the month of June 2015, the NSS volunteers of our college started making newspaper bags. Our main aim in newspaper bags is to create awareness among the students and the staff to reduce the usage of plastic bags and to replace the plastic bags by newspaper bags in the shops in and around the college and make our college plastic free. There are several disadvantages in using plastic bags. Burning of plastic materials and bags will release toxic gases and can cause health hazards. Recycling of plastic is possible but the cost is too hig, instead the newspapers can be used again and again by recycling.

Mr. Jugal Kishore, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science who started the newspaper bags in our college, teached a small group of students in how to make newspaper bags. Those students trained other volunteers. Nearly 30 students actively involved in making newspaper bags. The NSS Programme Officers motivated and they were the great support for the NSS volunteers in making the newspaper bags. Almost 150 newspaper bags were made by our NSS volunteers in the month of june. The usage of newspaper bags reduces the drawbacks of plastic since newspaper is user friendly.

The NSS volunteers collected the newspapers from several places like college hostel, staff quarters for preparing paper bags. Every day the NSS volunteers have been making the newspaper bags from 4.30 pm to 6.00 pm. Other than paper bags many products like paper basket, paper plate by moulding method have also been planned in near future.
